Annapolis Junction, M.D. – ESAB today announced that it is sponsoring Busted Knuckle Offroad (BK), a builder and retailer of off-road vehicles. BK produces high-end, high-horsepower off-road vehicles, as well as builds and sells off-road parts and accessories in a variety of categories. BK maintains a huge online and social media presence, as well as operates extreme motorsports and apparel film company out of Cullman, Ala.
Co-owners Jake Burkey and Matt Myrick demonstrate their off-road expertise by building and fabricating vehicles with welding and cutting equipment and accessories from ESAB.
“Some of our vehicles are $200,000. Since we’re designing vehicles from scratch, there is a lot of fabrication involved,” says Burkey. “That’s the tip of the iceberg. We also produce films and have a retail portion of Busted Knuckle Offroad. We have a couple of million followers on at least one of our social media pages because they love our off-road videos and they get to see documentation of our work.”
As the exclusive welding and cutting equipment supplier for BK, a variety of ESAB products will be featured throughout the team’s off-road competition as well as in the shop for vehicle fabrication and customization projects. Burkey and his team will demonstrate their expertise using the Rebel™ EMP 215ic multi-process welder, ET 220i AC/DC Stick/TIG welder, Thermal Dynamics® Cutmaster® 60i plasma cutter, Sentinel™ A50 welding helmets, and an assortment of accessories and gear.
“We’re using all the processes to weld the frame and chassis, as well as and a lot of TIG for components such as fuel cells, headers, and exhaust systems,” says Burkey. “I can take a guy who is an average welder and put him on an ESAB machine and he becomes a better welder right off the bat. They’re very intuitive.”
BK vehicles have few fabrication limitations.
“There’s a handful of rules, such as tire size, a roll cage, and safety equipment. Other than that, we let our imagination run wild. With our engineering background and racing experience, we create vehicles that are best for the terrain, such as rock bouncing,” says Burkey.
For an eight-person shop, the future of BK is shaped by the quality of its work.
“We don’t have to grind out welds and start over. We’re getting high-quality welds the first time,” says Burkey. “The equipment is definitely head and shoulders above the competition.”
“We’re excited to be involved with Busted Knuckle Offroad and to have its audience see ESAB products in action,” says Bill Wehrman, Global/North American Marketing Communications, ESAB. “Jake and his team build some of the highest quality off-road vehicles in the industry, and we’re confident that ESAB welding and cutting products are perfect for this environment.”
